Sunnyside Interact Students learn what it takes to run a  non profit organization
like RiverTree and "Interact" with other agencies.
We continue to monitor trees planted in past years and replace those that did not make it.
Our oak trees that have sprouted about 1 inch have roots over one foot long!  Time to get them in the ground!

RiverTree repair at Riverside Trail.  The fence was cut by the Fresno Fire Department two
years ago in the process of rescuing someone who fell down the bluff and broke their leg.
On March 2 we floated down the San Joaquin River from Lost Lake to Fort Washington
Beach. We pulled out a few bags of trash and one tire and were treated to the site of a
mountain lion running along the bluff and several deer.  When are you coming out to join
us on the river?
As of March 3 we have removed 3,801 tires from the San Joaquin River and it's flood plain.
Lunch stop on March 22 river trip.  Two new paddlers on the river.
2008 National River Cleanup

The first two days of National River Cleanup have resulted in the removal of 7 tires
and approximately 62 bags of trash from the stretch of the San Joaquin River from
Lost Lake to River Bottom Park.

September 13 thru 17  River Cleanups in preparation for the San Joaquin River
Canoe and Kayak Race

September 15  Military Staff Ride

Sep 25 and 26  Great Sierra River Cleanup and National Public Lands Day Be part of a
50 mile cleanup of the San Joaquin River.  RiverTree will take the part of the river
From Hwy 99 to Skaggs Bridge County Park and do what we can.  We will meet at
0830 at the corner of Avenue 7 and Golden State.  Going north on Highway 99 cross
the San Joaquin River and take the first exit which is Avenue 7.  Turn left and
immediately at the bottom of the overpass turn left again.  That is where check in will
be.  From there we will convoy to three cleanup sites. We expect to be done about 2
PM each day but people can leave at any time.  We will have canoes available on a
first come basis.  If you have a canoe or kayak bring it.  kayaks can fill trash bags and
bring them to a canoe.  Don't want to get in the water?  The bluffs need help along
Herndon Avenue and Sierra Avenue.  WE will provide gloves, trash bags, bottled
water and some snacks.  Please wear appropriate foot wear, even in the water.
There is sharp glass and sharp edges.  Old tennis shoes work well.

Cove starts at 0900.

If you can bring your canoe or kayak to help out on any of these cleanups we can really
use it to free up RiverTree canoe space for others.  Let us know if you are bringing one
and want help with a shuttle.  More and more people are using the river and there is
considerably more small trash out there than in previous years.  Kayaks are perfect for
grabbing the small trash and delivering it to canoes.

SAFETY:  Please ware foot protection!  Something with closed toes.  There is a lot of
broken glass out there!  We had one volunteer wearing very thick, open toed Tevas, who
kicked a piece of glass while rolling a tire in 4 inches of water and sliced his big toe.

To reserve a canoe space or for more information or directions please give me a call at

Thank you to all who have donated to RiverTree.  Your small
donations have added up and has enabled us to order an eight
spot canoe trailer which we are now hoping to fill with new
canoes!   We are very grateful!   Please know that we are
constantly out on the river and trying to evaluate from week to
week where your volunteer efforts are best spent.  As you know
we do not want to waste your time or capabilities (or fun factor).

2009 was an incredible year. RiverTree volunteers have helped over 1,000 individuals enjoy a free canoe ride on
the San Joaquin River.  Many more used our canoes in conjunction with river cleanups!  Volunteers helped to
remove 563 tires and tons of trash from the San Joaquin River and its' banks.  Tons of invasive parrot feather
were also removed from the worm farm channel upstream of Lost Lake to help  build a handicapped accessible
fishing area.  Graffiti was also removed from Parkway and Cal Trans properties.  We could not have had such a
successful year without your help and the help of agencies like the San Joaquin River Conservancy, California
Department of Fish and Game, Cal Trans, and the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.  Longs (CVS), Food For Less, Herb
Bauers, Wal Mart, Crystal Geyser, and individuals all donated snacks or material.  The California Coastal
Commission and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy sponsored  the large cleanup in September in which 9 tons of
trash was removed from the river.  A special thanks goes to CSUF, its' students and professors, many of whom
participated.

2009 saw 2 more canoes added to our small fleet, some new life jackets and tools.  The Fresno Regional
Foundation made a large donation to RiverTree on 30 October which will add a new canoe trailer and canoes,
new tools, and tree caging material.  Thus 2010 promises to be a good year on the river.

2009 saw the start of the Bullard High School RiverTree Club and 11 of their members becoming canoe certified
at Scout Island.
